Blue Flax Wildflower Seeds
82Blue Flax plants come from native flowers that originated in California. These blue garden flowers are very well adapted throughout North America. Blue flax prefers to grow in sandy soil that is light and dry. Full sun is best for most native flowers, and Blue Flax is no exception.
The blue flowers are cup-shaped and a very light blue color. They sit on slender stalks of silvery green foliage. The plant grows between 12-24 inches high. The great thing about these blue garden flowers is that they bloom continuously from May through September.
Once planted, Blue Flax will survive well, spread, and reseed; as long as it is allowed to follow its natural habits. These native flowers do not transplant well. They are best grown from seed. Some larger plants will transplant and do well if they are carefully watched, but not overwatered. Remember NOT to fertilize or plant Blue Flax in a wet location.
One of the best ways to learn about native plants is to read product descriptions. Bloom time, height, water and sun requirements, scientific names, and even related flowers are often included in product descriptions. Flower Seeds for Blue Flax Wildflowers
Linum lewisii
This plant was discovered by Lewis and Clark on their famous expedition in the18th century. It is named after Merewether Lewis.
Some stories imply that he wanted to name the flower after his mother. Either way, the scientific name of "lewisii" has been in use for over a hundred years.
Flower Seeds for Blue Flax Wildflowers
Linum perrene
This is the most commonly known variety of Blue Flax. If a gardener wants blue garden flowers that thrive with very little care, this is the plant to choose.
Just spread the seeds lightly on the soil, or plant in small paper cups. Using paper cups is an advantage because the whole planting can go in the ground- cup and all. That way, the roots will not be disturbed. If it's done early enough, there is no problem at all with this type of transplant.
Remember not to over-water after trasnplant. Keep an eye on the plant for a few weeks, but don't fuss. Native flowers don't like to be over-tended.
